Thanks to poor shooting, gun malfunctions, and holes in the waders, we didn't get as many birds as we should have. We headed out to the blind in 30 degree weather with frozen ground. When we pulled up, the boat was submerged in the water. With all of the rain that we had this last week, Tara is officially full. The blind used to be 10 yards out of the water and now it is fully in the water. so when hunting, y’all will need waders. We threw out the decoys and waited. 10 minutes before shooting light the first ducks appeared above the lake, and then More came and then More came and then More came. We probably had 50 ducks on our pond by shooting light. Unfortunately my son’s gun malfunctioned and would not cycle properly after the first shot was taken so we missed the first group of ducks. Throughout the next couple of hours we had constant action on the pond until about 10 o'clock. We were able to get one wigeon and three rignecks as our final haul. All the birds were focused on the east side of the pond back in the cove or at the northeast top of the lake. The current blind is really nice but it looks directly into the sun at sun rise so if we go back next time (or if someone wants to join us) we would like to hunt back in one of those areas. We probably saw 30 to 40 mallards land at the northeast top of the lake throughout the entire day and a bunch of wigeon landed back in the cove. All in all we probably saw about 200 birds today. Best day at Tara so far! We should've had 2 limits for sure if we had set up on the east side because that is where every bird wanted to be but that's hunting! Good luck and if you have the opportunity, I'd hunt it.
