Fry
One ring-necked duck came in about 10 minutes before LST. It swam from the middle of the lake into the cove, which was back and to the left of the blind. That bird was harvested by exiting the blind in order to take the shot. Other than that, no birds came to the lake.
The lake to the southwest had lots of ducks and geese. Our calling got high fliers to slow down and give us looks on Salt Lick Lake. However, the live decoys on the adjoining property were more persuasive than our plastic variety. A mid-morning walk along the fence line confirmed that waterfowl had stacked up on the western half of the neighboring lake.
There are some points to highlight for future hunters. First, the gate still has a keyed lock on it, so it appears that this new club lake hasn’t received the combination lock yet. We left our vehicle parked along US 80, climbed over the gate, and hauled our stuff to the blind. Secondly, this is a quarry lake, so it wasn’t a surprise that the water drops off quickly from the shore. With our line lengths, all of our decoys were placed within 5 yards of the bank. Thirdly, Cole mentioned to me last night that a second blind had been placed at the property. It isn’t on the map yet, but it is directly southeast across the lake from the blind on the north bank. That second blind sits in the shadow of the dam (between the main lake and the pond) and blends in quite well to its surroundings. Lastly, if anyone is hunting without a dog and needs to retrieve birds, the club boats are by the gravel ramp which is located at the southernmost tip of the lake.
