Actually, it was more like Ringneck Wednesday. Buzzed by a nice bunch of teal just before sunrise, but they smelled a rat (or more pricisely, an old coot) and went on their way. Then a few dozen ringnecks arrived and hung out mostly on the far side of the lake, other than one dopey hen that inexplicably paddled across the lake and into my decoy spread. But I don’t like to eat ringnecks so I don’t shoot them. Mid morning, I shot a widgeon drake over the decoys – other than the early morning teal, the only dabbling duck I saw. A hunter willing to move around a little and hide in the cattails could have shot a limit of ringnecks. They really wanted to be there
