My Mom wants to go Fishing

My Mother, God Bless Her ..is 94 years of age and said that she wish she could go fishing with me.  Was looking at the lakes and the boats provided....and Bryan Post Oak Lake is the one i am thinking about, Main reason is the nice pondtoon boat that is there,,,think my mom can get on that and stay comforable for a fishing outing.

Which lake would you members recommend?  or did i choose the right one?  Planning a trip after her birthday May 13, which will make her 95..and yes...she can still fish

Chris, I took a look at other people's posts about your destination and it sounds great!  Lots of fish, good pontoon boat, pretty site.  Just about ideal.

The only potential problem I saw was the weed situation.  You may wish to check that out, either personally or by talking to people who have fished Post Oak recently.

Good luck!

Will look into the weed situation Frank @ Post Oak,,,thanks for reaffirming my gut instinct on that barge.

Phillip, i just fished Bennett this last Saturday, and caught a bunch of channel cat on a chatter bait along the dam.  the dock was covered in water to the point that it was just visible underneath.  And I live about 26 minutes away and we got another 2 1/2 inches of rain on Sunday. I would Bet that dock will be underwater for awhile.   But, it was a wonderful lake...Just Mom is going to need some amenities for bathroom purposes and have to cross out Bennett because of that.  Going to probably reserve the lodge and barge for our visit to Post Oak.

Thanks for the input y'all.

If it were me I would take her to Patty's Melody acres. Drive her right down to the dock. Nice chair on the covered dock out of the sun. Take some cheap real fresh white bread and maybe some shrimp.  She will catch lots of bluegills and maybe some catfish.  Years ago (2007) I caught a 30" catfish from the dock on a bread ball.  Give her a number 8 hook and a bobber and a bread ball about pea size.  Chum the water with bread balls to get them    feeding and she will catch a hundred.  Plus great hosts at Melody acres.

I have been to Melody Acres and got to meet the owners, very nice folks and very accommodating.  They seemed discouraged that I didn't catch any fish while i was there, but it was a cold front and i only got a half day in before, i had to leave to something work related.  I will be back ...Mom would enjoy those folks, and the little goats running around..they were amusing to watch.  Good Idea Robert.

Phillip, all markers were gone or under water, and yes sir, the dock was covered and the water murky color...but the bite was awesome, excusing the wind.  No Crappie darn it...next time.

With the water temps in the low 70's. Those bluegills, crappie and catfish will be active.  At 70 degrees bluegills are thinking bedding plus their metabolism are burning calories.  You will find a difference this time when you go.  Get them feeding and it becomes a frenzy.  I bet that standing on the dock and looking to your right towards the shallows would be a great place to throw a bronze eyed spro black frog from four o'clock till dusk.

Robert, I've fished Melody many times over the years, but never have caught a catfish.  (To be fair, I've never fished for them, either!)  I know that at one time a really big catfish was there, the famed "Melody Monster."

Have you had much success with catfish there, or was your nice catch a rarity?   I have some grandkids who would absolutely love catching just about anything that bites...

Chris, your report on water levels at Bennett shocked me.  The one time I fished there me and my buddy had to literally climb down seven feet to get to the boat in dock, the water was that low!  Going up the nearly sheer slope with our tackle at the end of the day was such a challenge that we decided to put in on shore, unload the boat (including battery & trolling motor), and have one person paddle the boat into the dock.  The other person could assist them with a rope, which we did.  Good lake, but memories of that kept me from going back.  Gonna have to try again!

Frank,  Patty had a name for that catfish, but it has slipped my mind.  I specifically fished for it.  It's residence was under the dock. It was July and the temps were in low 100's and hot. I couldn't get into the boat as it was like a Boy Scout Dutch oven. So I fished from the dock.  Caught a few Bass on top water from the dock that trip. Now back to Chris's Mom, Melody Acres is ideal location. Got the covered dock and easy to get in and out of boat if desired. At 95 I would opt for a dock location.  Thinking that Lakeside would be another great location for her. Covered dock and lots of big gills.  Plus he could rent the house for the day and cool off for lunch. I not sure how far of a ride that would be from her house.  Just a thought.

thanks again for the suggestions,  will reserve a spot for Mom and I as soon as she gets a clear two weeks of no doctor visits...

Mom , still talks about the times we went up Neches river at Chandler and chased the sand bass run...she had a blast and talks about having to lay down to avoid overhanging tree branches and us jumping logs....she is a trooper...Love her so much
